THE FUNHOUSE(1981)
Tobe Hooper directs this slasher based on a book by Dean R. Koontz, the book was the first horror novel i ever read as a young teen so when the movie came out i was tickled that they had made a film based on the novel and probably because of that Ive always been a tad biased when it came to this movie and maybe gave it a little more credit than it deserves.
A group of friends decide to get themselves locked in a carnival funhouse after closing to do some partying and much to thier horror they meet up with a deformed killer in a Frankenstein mask . Its pretty tame in the gore department especially considering it was released during the first few years of the big slasher boom when every one was trying to out gore each other and its really tame considering some of the things that happened in the novel , but that's understandable as some of that stuff would have never been allowed on the screen by the MPAA.
With me Hooper's films are really hit or miss but this is one of his better movies in my opinion , not TEXAS CHAINSAW or SALEMS LOT good but still a enjoyable flick.

HATCHET(2007)
A group of tourist in New Orleans go on a haunted swamp boat ride and encounter a deformed psycho killer .
This one irritated me a little bit, it was hyped as a return to old school horror/slasher films of the 80's but i didn't really see it that way , to me it was just dumb. Except for the bloody killings there is not much to offer here, this film is in reality a return to the old school 80's stupid teenager titty movies ala PORKYS , while those can be entertaining that's not what i want to see when i watch a horror movie. Once again i will agree that the gore was fairly impressive but in the end this movie sinks in its own swamp of silly juvenile humor.

LET ME IN (2010)

This is an absolutely wonderful vampire tale from Matt Reeves the director of the also impressive CLOVERFIELD. This film some how manages to be touching , beautiful , bleak , depressing and horrifying at the same time , a feat not easily achieved and one that most directors could not pull off , this movie is just classy .This should be the template of how a horror movie is made . How this is not HUGE is a mystery to me , a billion times better than all those SAW films and the glut of crap passed off as horror nowadays, it seems that out of every 10 horror films made today there is usually only 1 or 2 in the bunch worth a look. This is a remake of the Swedish film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and although it sticks pretty close to the original film it surpasses it in my opinion. A boy who is relentlessly bullied at school , befriends a girl who moves into his apartment complex, it just so happens that she is a vampire and when she learns what is happening to him at school she promises to protect him from his tormentors. The attacks of the bullies are as hard to watch as the vampire attacks , both are truly horrifying to see . The way that the life of the vampire is portrayed is not glamorized and romanticized like in most films of the genre, here the director makes you realize that there life is one of loneliness, having to move around often to escape the law , they don't really want to do what they do , they don't enjoy it but its what they need to do to survive. The director also does a great job making you feel sympathetic for the 2 lead characters , throughout the film you'll find yourself cheering for them to avoid the police so they can be together . Probably the best movie made in the last decade , highly highly recommended , i cant say enough positive things about this.

VIRGINIA CREEPERS:THE HORROR HOST TRADITION OF THE OLD DOMINION (2009)
A great documentary that presents 50 years of some of the state of Virgina's favorite horror hosts , hosted by Cinema Insomnia's Mr. Lobo . The large number of hosts covered here insures that the film moves along at a fast pace so it never has slow spots or gets boring. I absolutely love this doc. , call it nostalgia or whatever but this really captures the vibe of these shows and does a good job showing how much fun it was being a kid and staying up on sat. nights and watching shows like these.
It also covers a good number of newer hosts , many of them having internet shows that you can enjoy . It was a fun time for television and horror that has been lost and i truly miss those days. Thanks to great websites like THE HORROR HOST GRAVEYARD and THE MONSTER CHANNEL you can experience it all again ,they have shows and links to shows and info covering just about every host you've ever heard of and many you will experience for the first time. I highly recommend this film. You should also support these websites and others like them. Fun fun stuff.

CATHY'S CURSE (1977)
Slow moving, boring film trying to cash in on the possession buzz that swept the country in the wake of THE EXORCIST. Cathy is a little girl possessed by the spirit of her evil dead aunt whose soul is trapped in Cathy's rag doll, pretty soon family members mysteriously start dying off and when Cathy's mother realizes
whats going on she tries to put a stop to the devilish happenings. There is really not much else to say about this as it is a dull movie where nothing much happens. I recommend that you avoid this cinematic sleeping pill.

KILLING SPREE (1987)
Asbestos Felt stars as Tom , a man who finds what he thinks is his wife's diary detailing extra marital affairs , this causes him to go crazy and he then goes on the title killing spree offing the men he thinks she is sleeping with , this has a twist ending that ends up elevating this insanity up another notch on the crazy meter. Bad acting , bad dialog and just a bad overall look, along with buckets of gore are all here in abundance . All this silliness yet somehow its still watchable . Bad movie fans will get a kick out of this. Brought to us by Tim Ritter who gave us TRUTH OR DARE(1986) another story of a man who loses his mind and goes on a bloodyrampage.

TH
E CARPENTER(1987)
Wings Hauser stars as the title character , the ghost of a man who was executed for going on a killing spree after finding out his wife was having an affair . He comes back to haunt the house that he was in the process of remodeling at the time of his death. He befriends and falls in love with the wife of the new owner and begins killing those who he thinks are his enemies or whoever tries to get close to her or the house. Not overly gory but it does have its moments . A decent slasher from the goofy 80's , bloody and dumb mindless fun and pretty cool if your looking for something that's not well known..
